Sew Up Your Scraps! By Marina Jefferey

Hello, Friends!

We just finished our February Sewcial (social gathering of sewing friends), and boy, are we BUZZED!

Our guest speaker series was graced by quilter and sewing friend, Marina Jeffery. She is a Ras Al Khaimah based quilt teacher, who loves to create. Hence, thanks to her sewing passion, Marina always found herself with scrap fabrics at the end of any finished sewing project.

The scraps started to pile on, and instead of giving it away or worse, THROWING it away, Marina thought of using them to make Scrap Quilts. Now, I know what you are thinking- scrap quilts mostly look messy, with no color coordination, and usually aren’t something to boast about. However, with her knowledge in  patchwork, Marina really showcased how BRILLIANT a scrap fabric based project can turn out.

Today, we will be sharing some of her inspiration to inspire YOU to Sew Up Your Scraps! We really are in AWE, Marina!        You may even watch the videos of the quilts in this Instagram Reel: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CotzcMlJT-t/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Marina’s Top Tips for Making Scrap Quilts

  1. Most of the time you will be grouping colors, but don’t worry if they all are not evenly matched In terms of shades. Just put together the reds for your red parts, your greens for your green parts and etc
  2. Pic patterns that allow you to use smaller cuts as scraps are usually not big chunks of fabrics. So sizes like 2.5 inches or appliqué really works
  3. If it doesn’t match as you are going with the flow, use the block anyway! You will be surprised once you add your background how things blend well
  4. Use scarp fabric projects to really practice things you’re scared of. Like embroidery was one of her ideas
  5. She also thinks using it to make smaller items that are handy, like pincushions, mobile phone holders etc, are really fun ways to use your scraps

Hope you enjoyed reading today’s blog and have found inspiration to use your scraps.

To witness things like this face to face, we invite you to attend our next social! Our next Sewing Social will be at the store on the 12th of April, 2023. More details to follow!

Happy Sewing,

Aish
